History

Nightingale's high-quality history education ensures pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It inspires pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and equips pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Our History curriculum helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

The teaching of History at Nightingale is linked wherever possible to the local environment in Hackney from the earliest Anglo-Saxon settlements on the banks of the River Lea through to the way the Windrush Generation helped to build the Hackney we know and love today. This allows children to envision the changes that have happened over time and to understand how this has impacted modern life. Nightingale's History curriculum also includes frequent trips and visits including to all the major historical sites and museums London has to offer. Children also learn and perform many Micro-Musicals to re-enforce their learning of History's greatest stories which are further re-enforced with our use of Now Press Play's interactive audio experiences.
